Faf du Plessis on why Hardus Viljoen was not playing: He’s in bed with my sister!
Faf du Plessis humorously revealed in a 2019 interview that Hardus Viljoen missed a match because he was in bed with Du Plessis’s sister, Rhemmi Rynners, whom Viljoen had married the previous day. Picture: DIBYANGSHU SARKAR / AFP

A classic clip re-emerged on social media on Monday, with Faf du Plessis revealing his teammate was not available for the match because he was in bed with his sister.
In the video from 2019 posted by @RichKettle07, the interviewer asks about team changes when Du Plessis explains the tongue-in-cheek reason why allrounder Hardus Viljoen was not playing.
Viljoen married the sister of Du Plessis, Rhemmi Rynners, the previous day.
Instead of simply saying Viljoen was not available because he had just got married, he went into unnecessary detail.
Du Plessis with classic Hardus Viljoen Moment
“One change. Hardus Viljoen is not playing. He’s lying in bed with my sister. They got married yesterday.”
The interview promptly ended there as Du Plessis struggled to keep it together.
The match was from the predecessor of the SA20, the Mzansi Super League, in which Du Plessis was captaining the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants.
Du Plessis retired from Test cricket in 2021, but did not yet call time on his limited overs career. However, he did not play for South Africa again despite continuing to play in the IPL and the SA20.
Du Plessis now captains the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) in the SA20. In the fourth edition of the SA20, which was completed last month, JSK finished fourth on the table. Du Plessis had his tournament cut short though due to injury as he played just seven matches.
JSK would go on to be eliminated by the Paarl Royals in the eliminator. Viljoen starred in that match, with 3/24 with the ball.
