Newlands gets fair share of Twenty20

Michael Owen-smith|Published

Newlands will host nine matches, including four in the Super 8 phase plus one of the semi-finals, when the ICC Twenty20 world championship is held in South Africa in September.

The other two venues, the Wanderers and Kingsmead, will host the same number of matches with Kingsmead getting the other semi-final while the final goes to the Wanderers. The Johannesburg ground will also host the tournament's opening match between South Africa and the West Indies on September 11.

The tournament format allows for three matches to be played each day with double headers being a feature.

Details of ticket sales and prices have still to be announced but it is likely that they will be similar to the 2003 World Cup with spectators able to buy a stadium package rather than for individual matches.
