'Stormers to help Jake if Spears put on hold'
Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe will be prepared to rest top Springboks at national coach Jake White's request in next year's Super 14 if SA Rugby are able to put the Southern Spears' participation on hold.
The Spears have been guaranteed participation in 2007 and 2008, which means the fourth-placed of South Africa's other franchises will go down to make way for the Lions (formerly the Cats) again after next year's Super 14.
"It makes it difficult to rest Springboks at Jake's request if there is a threat of relegation," said Van der Merwe.
"If that whole issue surrounding the Spears can be resolved, it will be much easier to act in the best interests of SA rugby. We would then be prepared to give him our full co-operation."
The resting of players at vital times could have a positive impact on South Africa's chances at the World Cup.
White will communicate with the Super 14 coaches on a monthly basis after this year's end-of-season tour.
"What we've pointed out to SA Rugby is that in a short space of two years they can financially destroy two major unions," said WP Rugby managing director Rob Wagner.
"If there's another relegation struggle, the unfortunate thing is that the Super 14 teams will be at full strength in every game and concentrate solely on survival.
"Obviously we would like to help Jake. The top priority is to assist South Africa to do well. Unfortunately the World Cup is a one-off.
"What happens afterwards if we have financially been cut to pieces?"
