Henry lights up the field for Arsenal
London - Brief reports of Premier League matches played on Sunday:
ARSENAL 4 WIGAN ATHLETIC 2
Thierry Henry lit up Arsenal's final match at Highbury with his ninth Arsenal hat-trick to help secure the fourth Champions League spot after Tottenham Hotspur slipped up.
In a see-saw encounter, Arsenal led when Robert Pires pounced from close range but a minute later Austrian defender Paul Scharner got on the end of a whipped free kick to level.
German keeper Jens Lehmann was then left with egg on his face as David Thompson caught him napping with a free kick from 45 metres.
Thierry Henry got his first 10 minutes before halftime to calm Arsenal nerves and the Frenchman was celebrating again early in the second half when he latched on to a poor back pass from Thompson to make it 3-2. He completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Freddie Ljungberg had been hauled down by Andreas Johansson, who was sent off.
ASTON VILLA 2 SUNDERLAND 1
Villa fans vented their dissatisfaction at boss David O'Leary throughout the game as the Midlands side finished their campaign a disappointing 16th.
They at least ended with a win against the bottom side.
Gareth Barry fired Villa ahead against the run of play just before halftime and the home side doubled the lead on 78 minutes. Barry had a penalty saved by Kelvin Davis but from the following corner Liam Ridgewell made it 2-0. A late goal from Danny Collins gave the Sunderland fans something to cheer.
BLACKBURN ROVERS 2 MANCHESTER CITY 0
A blunder from keeper David James sent City on their way to another defeat against a Rovers side who have surprised many by finishing sixth.
The England international dropped a corner into Zurab Khizanishvili's path and the Georgian buried the gift on 35 minutes.
Finnish striker Shefki Kuqi fired in a second before Rovers had Turkish midfielder Tugay sent off for a professional foul.
BOLTON WANDERERS 1 BIRMINGHAM CITY 0
Young Portuguese striker Ricardo Vaz Te netted the only goal at the Reebok Stadium as goal-shy Birmingham exited the top-flight with a whimper.
Vaz Te netted his third goal in four games when he got on the end of Kevin Nolan's cross on 65 minutes.
EVERTON 2 WEST BROMWICH ALBION 2
Veteran striker Duncan Ferguson, captain for the day, rescued a draw for Everton with a last-minute goal in possibly his last game for the club.
Ferguson, set to retire, slammed home a rebound from his own penalty which had been saved by Tomasz Kuszczak. Everton trailed 2-0 until the 84th-minute before Nigerian teenage striker Victor Anichebe started the fightback.
Relegated Albion led through goals from Hungarian Zoltan Gera and Uruguayan defender Williams Martinez, making his first Premier League start.
FULHAM 1 MIDDLESBROUGH 0
UEFA Cup finalists Boro, who take on Sevilla in Eindhoven on Wednesday in new England coach Steve McClaren's final game in charge, fielded a reserve side made up entirely of English players, including 10 England youth internationals.
Boro more than held their own but were sunk by Heidar Helguson's penalty six minutes from time which secured Fulham's 13th home win of the season.
MANCHESTER UNITED 4 CHARLTON ATHLETIC 0
United brushed aside Charlton to take the second automatic Champions League place but the main talking point came before the start when Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy stormed out of Old Trafford after being left out of the team.
Louis Saha's 15th goal of the season began the rout on a sorry day for departing Charlton manager Alan Curbishley, stepping down after 15 years at the helm.
Cristiano Ronaldo and a Jason Euell own goal had United 3-0 up at the break and Kieran Richardson added a fourth.
NEWCASTLE UNITED 1 CHELSEA 0
Champions Chelsea lost consecutive league games for the first time under coach Jose Mourinho, defender Titus Bramble booking Newcastle a place in the Intertoto Cup.
Bramble ruined stand-in keeper Lenny Pidgley's day by volleying in the winner on 73 minutes.
The home side had Stephen Carr sent off two minutes later but held on. England striker Michael Owen, who made his comeback from a long-term foot injury last week, did not play.
PORTSMOUTH 1 LIVERPOOL 3
An injury to Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso overshadowed Liverpool's victory.
Alonso was carried off on a stretcher with an ankle injury and faces a race to be fit for next weekend's FA Cup final against West Ham United.
Robbie Fowler celebrated his new contract by slotting in the opening goal after 52 minutes and Peter Crouch sidefooted in his 13th goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Ognjen Koroman pulled one back before Djibril Cisse got a third a minute from time.
WEST HAM UNITED 2 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1
FA Cup finalists West Ham left Spurs' Champions League hopes in tatters, the White Hart Lane side pipped to the fourth Champions League spot by bitter rivals Arsenal.
The game went ahead despite several Spurs players suffering from food poisoning, although their starting line-up showed no notable absentees.
Midfielder Carl Fletcher let fly from 30 metres to give the hosts the lead before West Ham old boys Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe combined for Defoe to equalise from a tight angle.
Spurs' England keeper Paul Robinson saved Teddy Sheringham's penalty but West Ham won it 10 minutes from time when Yossi Benayoun blasted in.
