KZN athletes get set

Athletes will be using the three upcoming league fixtures to either fine tune their performances or secure their places in the KwaZulu-Natal squad who will participate in the South African Games in East London in April.

A provisional team of under-17 athletes has already been selected and the leagues will assist them in assessing their performances before the Games.

The first league, the Youth/ Junior/Senior track and field meeting takes place at King's Park Athletic Stadium tonight at 5.30pm.

Confirmed KwaZulu-Natal team members include Zamani Khumalo (100m), Quinton Dormell (200m), Sabelo Bhodoza (400m), Nontobeko Gumede (100m), Kerry-Ann Walton (200m), Tanya Smith (long jump) and Nkosingiphile Mthethwa (3 000m).

The second league is scheduled to take place on January 31.

Local athletes will also participate in the Absa Series that gets under way in Secunda on February 6.

Top provincial contenders are Lee-Roy Newton, Morne Nagel, Mathew Quinn and Kerryn Hulzen.

Athletes from various parts of the country will converge on Durban for the Olympic Trials on April 16 and 17.
