Premier out, but Ajax through to quarters

Defending champions Premier United bowed out and last year's runners-up Ajax Cape Town moved through to the quarterfinals of the SAFA Western Province Coca-Cola Challenge Cup.

This was part of the drama played out at the Avonwood Sports ground in Elsies River on Saturday.

Premier were put out by a golden goal by Hellenic after the game ended 1-1. Ajax Cape Town bounced back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Riverside Rangers 4-3.

The game was full of drama with two red cards and three penalties.

Riverside head coach Les Mondo was sent off from the bench, after referee Faiek Daniels had red-carded Barry-lee Harold midway through the first half for a bad tackle.

Riverside opened the scoring from the penalty spot when Clayton Jaggers scored in the 18th minute. Four minutes later Darren Harker netted the second goal.

However, Ajax fought back and striker Romano Scott put Ajax back into the game with a great goal in the 31st minute. Midfielder Clint Nicholson headed home the equaliser for Ajax.

Riverside, who were playing a good brand of football had another chance to go ahead in the 40th minute when they were awarded their second penalty. This time goalkeeper Andre Petim brought off a good save from Jaggers.

Just before the interval Mahier Davids scored from 35 metres beating goalkeeper Malcolm Sheldon, with the ball hitting the roof of the net (3-2).

Riverside levelled matters in the 70th minute when Bradley Manual beat Petim with a fine header.

The winning goal came from Scott who netted from the spot. Stars of the Ajax side were Scott, midfielder Davids and winger Mkhanyiseli Sihwala.

Davids left the field with an injured left ankle in the 75th minute.

For Riverside Michael Ficks and Ricardo Williams shone.
