Manchester, England - Manchester United appointed its first foreign coach on Thursday when it named former Portugal and South Africa coach Carlos Queiroz as its new assistant manager.

The Mozambique-born Queiroz follows in the footsteps of Archie Knox, Brian Kidd, Steve McClaren and Jim Ryan in serving as Alex Ferguson's assistant at Old Trafford.

Queiroz, 49, was the manager of South Africa until March of this year, having been appointed in the summer of 2000.

His success in guiding South Africa to the World Cup finals was overshadowed by its disappointing performance in the African Nations Cup where it was knocked out in the quarterfinals by host Mali.

"My future lies with a project with the potential for success," Queiroz told Manchester United's official website. - Sapa-AP
