Corne Krige and Desiree Ellis won the top Western Cape sports awards at the weekend.
Krige, the Stormers and Western Province rugby captain, was named Western Cape sportsman of the year and Ellis, captain of the South African women's football team, was sportswoman of the year.
Finalists in the men's category were Bafana Bafana captain Shaun Bartlett and disabled sports star Ernst van Dyk.
Finalist with Ellis in the women's section were Alexa Lombard (canoeing) and Portia Vries (weightlifting).
Soccer won four awards. SAFA Western Province president Vernon Seymour was named administrator of the year, Santos midfielder Thando Mngomeni was most promising player and David Martin (WP and SA Soccer Federation captain) was given the lifetime achiever award.
Coach of the year was Bennie Saayman of the Boland provincial netball team.
Other award-winners were Ernst van Dyk (disabled sport), Leanne Sterrenberg (disabled sport), WP Volleyball (sports federation) and Brian Gaffney (Cape Community Newspapers, media award).
