PSL promises better refs for First Division

The Premier Soccer League's head of referees, Sylvester Ndaba, has assured First Division clubs that officiating this season will improve.

He was responding to complaints about the standard of refereeing, particularly in Durban.

Ndaba, who is chairman of the national referees technical committee, said: "I know that some clubs went through hell because of poor match officials. But that will be a thing of the past. We have been given the green light by the PSL to appoint inspectors for all First Division matches."

He said the coastal region, in which Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth clubs play, would have senior referees as inspectors.

Among them will be Achmat Salie, Ian McLeod, Ashraf Parker, Mark Lyndon, Trevor Christian and Keith Verhoog.

"The job of the inspectors is to assess the performances of the match officials," said Ndaba.

"If the inspectors suspect any problem with the officials, the latter will be called before the referees committee. This is our way of quality control."

Cape Town clubs have often complained about poor match officials, especially in KwaZulu-Natal. They question the coincidence of three Durban clubs winning promotion in the past three years.

Battswood players remember arriving in Durban in 1995 along with the match referee, who had flown in from Johannesburg. But the appointed official was told he was not needed and a local referee appointed to handle the match. Battswood lost.

Aslam Galant, a Battswood official, said the club had protested to the league but while the offending club was fined, the result had stood.
