Award for soccer boss Oliphant

Molefi Oliphant, president of the South African Football Association will be honoured for his services to soccer by Safa Western Province on Saturday.

Vernon Seymour, president of the provincial body said a fund-raising banquet will be held on Saturday night as part of Safa Western Province's 10th anniversary.

"We are using the opportunity to make an award to Oliphant for the role he played in the unification of soccer in the country.

"He has been a kind of low-profile leader, staying out of the spotlight, but quietly going about stabilising the Safa operation and keeping the organisation afloat," said Seymour.

Oliphant will also be in town to conduct a workshop on the national body's two regional competitions, the Second Division Vodacom league and the Third Division Castle league.

On the playing side, the focus will be on the last 32 of the Coca-Cola Challenge Cup on Saturday.

Five venues are to used, with Symphony Park, Belhar (eight games) and the Stephen Reagon ground, Westridge, Mitchell's Plain (four games) hosting most of the games.

There are still nine Toyota Super League teams alive in the Challenge with two matches featuring teams from that league against each other.

At Westridge, Woodlands play Silver Spurs and at Symphony Park, Stephanian Ottery play last year's losing finalists Premier United.

The game between Cultural Roots and Tramway will be played at NY116 Gugulethu on September 1 at 3pm.
