Berman deal could benefit Corrie Sanders

Former World Boxing Union heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders stands to benefit from a business partnership Rodney Berman has entered into with American promoter Don King.

The South African could meet the winner between WBA champion John Ruiz and challenger Evander Holyfield. "I've had talks with King about this fight and I don't know whether it will happen. But I'm working on it and if it does take place it'll be early next year," said Berman.

With the heavyweight championship embroiled in "politics"- some would say in boardroom wheeling and dealing - it is not surprising that Berman is cautious about raising the hopes of South Africans.

But having pulled off miraculous deals before - who would have thought that Lennox Lewis would defend his WBC, IBF and WBO titles against Hasim Rahman in South Africa? - there is a long-shot that Corrie could find himself with the biggest payday of his life.

Who he meets will depend on who wins the October bout in Beijing and that is anybody's guess.

Harold Volbrecht, the manager/trainer of Sanders, is cautiously confident that Holyfield has more than an even chance of reversing his points defeat by Ruiz for the then vacant belt the WBA took away from Lewis. "Holyfield is not what he used to be and I think Corrie has a good chance of beating him," said Volbrecht.

In the interim Sanders is scheduled to fight an Englishman, whose name cannot be disclosed until he has been approved by the Board of Control, at Carnival City in October.
