Bangalore - Nightwatchman Nicky Boje hit 85 to lead South Africa past India's first innings total as they made 185 for two at tea on the second day of the second Test on Friday.

Playing in only his second Test, the left-arm spinner put on 161 runs for the second wicket with opener Gary Kirsten (78 not out). India scored 158 in their first innings.

Boje started off cautiously, gaining confidence as India's spinners struggled to apply pressure on a pitch that failed to produce the expected turn.

Boje hit nine boundaries, driving superbly, before being deceived by a straight ball from Anil Kumble that took his off stump.

Kirsten, who has hit seven boundaries, played a sedate innings, punishing loose deliveries with cuts and drives.

Jacques Kallis, who came in at the fall of Boje's wicket, was on four at tea.
