King of football now a grandpa

Rio de Janeiro - The king of football Pele became a grandfather for the first time on Thursday when his daughter-in-law gave birth to a 4,4kg baby girl in Sao Paulo.

The already famous child was named Stephany and a barrage of reporters were on hand to welcome her into the world as the proud parents showed off their new addition.

Pele's second son Edinho who was a former 'keeper with Brazilian side Santos fathered the child. He is the second of three children from the soccer legend's first marriage - he also has twins from his second wife.

Edinho was condemned to six years in open prison in October 1999 which allows him to work during the day providing he spends the night in prison.

The sentence was handed down for his part in a car accident that resulted in the death of a spectator during an illegal car race in 1992. - Sapa-AFP
