The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 disruptive rain warning for KwaZulu-Natal, including eThekwini, from Thursday, March 13 midnight until Friday, March 14 midnight.
The forecast predicts widespread showers and thundershowers, with heavy rainfall expected over the eastern parts of the province.
“These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by disruptive rain leading to localised flooding,” the eThekwini Municipality warned.
The severe weather may cause flooding of roads and settlements, poor driving conditions, damage to infrastructure, and destruction of mud-based houses.
Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling.
“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and maintain a safe following distance while driving on wet roads,” the municipality emphasised.
The municipality’s Disaster Management and Emergency Services are currently on standby and are monitoring weather developments closely.
Officials also strongly advise residents to stay indoors if possible and avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary.
“This alert remains subject to change, and the SAWS will update the warning accordingly,” the municipality said.
Authorities have also warned the public not to attempt to cross rivers and streams, as these could rapidly become dangerous due to rising water levels.
