A Gqeberha woman was arrested after a video showed her pushing a three-year-old boy to the ground, slapping him in the face, and repeatedly hitting him all over his tiny body while telling him he was making her "sick" and that she would call the police on him.
Police spokesman Captain André Beetge said the 28-year-old suspect was arrested in Nelson Mandela Bay's northern areas on Tuesday.
"Mount Road Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit arrested the female suspect on a charge of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm," he said.
"This follows after a viral video clip emerged on social media.
"In the clip, a three-year-old boy was severely assaulted by a female suspect.
"Through police investigation, the suspect was arrested in Bethelsdorp."
The one-minute and 30-second video shows the little boy — wearing a green shirt and black trousers — being struck on the head and all over his body.
At one point, the woman can be heard telling the boy, “You are making me sick… do you think it’s nice for me? I’ll get the police to come fetch you.”
She then grabs him, shakes him, and repeats her question, asking if he thinks it is “nice” for her.
Other people are visible in the house, attempting to intervene and stop the woman, but she continues to allegedly assault the child.
The boy cries hysterically throughout the attack.
After picking him up, the woman holds him tightly in her arms and storms out of the house.
She is then seen walking hand in hand with the boy, who appears to have stopped crying by that point.
The woman is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
She is facing a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Beetge said the investigation was ongoing and that additional charges may be added.
