The South African Police Service (SAPS) has embarked on a massive recruitment campaign to select 5,500 new police trainees.

With the recruitment drive spanning all nine provinces, thousands of applicants are currently engaged in the initial stage of assessment, which includes psychometric evaluations and integrity tests designed to gauge their mental suitability for the demanding role of a police officer.

This multi-phase selection process is comprehensive, ensuring that only the most qualified candidates are chosen to uphold public safety and maintain law and order.

Following the initial assessments, candidates will undergo physical fitness evaluations, thorough vetting procedures, and medical examinations.

While all eligible young individuals were invited to submit their applications, SAPS has indicated a preference for those who possess tertiary qualifications at the level of National Qualifications Framework (NQF) 6 or higher.

Additionally, applicants with a valid driver’s licence are also prioritised, marking a significant advantage in the selection timeline.

Since the closing date for applications in July, SAPS has received an overwhelming response, amassing over a million applications.

Among these submissions, a notable 334,765 applicants hold degrees in areas pertinent to policing, such as law, forensic investigation, and other related fields of study.

In light of the high volume of applications, SAPS urges all applicants to remain patient as the recruitment teams process the submissions and communicate with suitable candidates.

Training for the selected police trainees is due to begin in 2026, with the specific commencement date yet to be confirmed.

This timeline allows the SAPS to ensure that all candidates meet the necessary criteria before embarking on a career dedicated to serving and protecting the community.
