Dr John Hlophe, the Deputy President and Leader of the MKP parliamentary caucus, has been suspended with immediate effect as the party conducts a full investigation into his conduct. This decision was announced late on a Wednesday night following Zuma’s return from Burkina Faso.
Reasons for Suspension
The suspension is a precautionary measure, reflecting the MKP's commitment to collective leadership and the principles outlined in the Party Constitution. It follows a brief concerning recent changes in the National Assembly that occurred without wider consultation.
Nullification of Leadership Changes
As part of the decision, Hlophe’s removal of Comrade Collen Makhubele and the appointment of Comrade Des Van Rooyen have been deemed null and void. The party has reiterated its unity and focus on discipline and accountability.

Reassurance of Stability
The MKP aims to assure its members and the South African public that the organisation remains stable and committed to transformation and justice. The leadership is determined to uphold the values of internal organisation and communal decision-making.
Firing of Chief Whip
Earlier on the same day as Hlophe's suspension, the MKP dismissed its Chief Whip, Collen Makhubele, replacing her with Des Van Rooyen. The official statements did not provide explicit reasons for Makhubele’s firing, although it is believed that internal recommendations for her suspension due to misconduct had been made.
Controversial Allegations
Makhubele was reportedly involved in attempts to secure a lucrative service-provider contract worth over R180 000 a month, allegedly linked to her husband. She also failed a parliamentary vetting process for the Intelligence Portfolio Committee.
Suspension of Chief of Staff
Moreover, Vanessa Calvert, the MKP Chief of Staff, was suspended after refusing to authorise the appointment related to Makhubele's connections. Calvert confirmed she has returned to her position after a three-month suspension.

Van Rooyen's Notorious Reputation
Des Van Rooyen, now the MKP’s Chief Whip, has a controversial history, famously known as the 'weekend special' due to his brief appointment as Finance Minister. This marks his fourth term in this role since the 2024 general election.
