A small house fire broke out on Jacaranda Avenue in the Verulam CBD, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday after two minors were left alone at home while their mother purportedly shopping.
Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) responded to the incident and confirmed that the children, an 11-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, were inside the residence at the time the fire started.
“Members arrived on scene and established that the boy aged 11 and a girl aged 4 were inside the residence at the time of the incident," Rusa said.
Neighbours raised the alarm after noticing smoke coming from the house.
They investigated and discovered a fire inside a cupboard, which they managed to extinguish by throwing water on the flames before emergency services arrived.
Rusa officers were allegedly informed that the fire was accidental.
The older child reportedly told officers that he had been playing with hot glue and used a matchstick to ignite it, causing clothing stored in the cupboard to catch alight.
“The fire resulted in minor damage to the cupboard and clothing only.”
No injuries were reported, and both children were unharmed.
