A teenage boy has reached a plea agreement with the State, confessing to the rape, murder, and robbery of 79-year-old Valerie Enziar on her farm in Ladismith, Western Cape.
The violent crimes took place on July 14, 2025, at Doring Kloof farm, where Enziar had lived alone throughout her life—a fact that the accused, who was only 16 years old at the time, took advantage of. According to the agreed statement of facts, the teenager approached the farm on foot, removed a chain from the gate, and entered the premises.
According to the agreed statement of facts, the teenager approached the farm on foot, removed a chain from the gate, and entered the property.
He found the elderly woman sitting on her stoep reading, crept up on her, and struck her on the neck with a metal chain, knocking her unconscious.
He then raped her as she lay helpless on the stoep floor before strangling her to death using his hands and the same metal chain. After killing her, he entered the house through an open door and stole her laptop, cell phone, purse, and handbag.
He took her horse from the stable, rode it into the nearby bush, tied it to a tree, and dumped some of the stolen items.
He later went into town, used the deceased's bank card at a local shop to buy a pie and a cooldrink, and distributed the remaining stolen items among community.

He was subsequently apprehended by police and led investigators to the horse, the laptop, and the stolen property.
According to a source, the teenager's violent behaviour was not limited to this incident. It is alleged that prior to these crimes he had a disturbing history of cruelty toward animals, having killed them on more than one occasion, behaviour that prosecutors referenced as evidence of his natural propensity toward violence.
The matter was heard before the Western Cape High Court, currently sitting at the Wynberg Regional Court. Acting Judge Amanda Van Leeve presided over the proceedings, with State Prosecutor Renée Uys appearing for the prosecution and Advocate Nawaal Abduragmaan representing the accused.
The court noted several deeply troubling aggravating factors. The victim was elderly and lived alone, a vulnerability the accused knowingly targeted.
The crime showed a degree of premeditation uncommon even among adult offenders. The local neighbourhood watch and broader community had on two separate occasions formally opposed any prospect of the accused being released back into the community.
In mitigation, the defence noted that the accused was 16 years old at the time, had only reached Grade 4 in mainstream schooling, and had spent much of his childhood in youth care centres.
He pleaded guilty without going to trial, sparing witnesses from testifying, and expressed remorse for his actions.
Uys noted that this case is a reflection of the epidemic of gender-based violence in South Africa, particularly crimes committed against women in isolated, rural settings.
Acting Judge Van Leeve informed the court that she is satisfied that all allegations have been admitted to and that the accused stands convicted on all counts.
She further expressed that she is satisfied that the agreement reached between the State and the defence constitutes a just one in all the circumstances.
The accused was sentenced to 20 years for rape, 25 years for murder, and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The sentences for rape and robbery were ordered to run concurrently with the murder sentence, resulting in an effective sentence of 25 years' imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
