The City of Cape Town is inviting residents and road users to comment on proposed changes to sections of Charl Malan Street in the Bellville CBD that could see parts of the road converted into vehicle-free zones.

The proposed changes, which form part of the City's plans to upgrade the Bellville CBD as Cape Town's second metropolitan hub, are aimed at improving pedestrian safety and managing vehicle access in the area.

A public participation process opened on Wednesday, and will remain open until Friday, June 26.

The section of Charl Malan Street between South Street and Wilshammer Street would be converted from a two-way carriageway to a one-way northbound route with managed vehicular access, according to the proposal.

The section between Church Street and the southern boundary of the Eskom property would also become a one-way northbound route with managed vehicular access and access controls at both ends.

The road sections between Wilshammer Street and Church Street, and between the southern boundary of the Eskom property and Voortrekker Road, would remain unchanged.

Mayoral committee member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, said the proposal forms part of the City's long-term vision for the Bellville CBD.

"The proposed changes form part of the City's plans to improve and upgrade the Bellville CBD as Cape Town's second metropolitan hub," he said.

Quintas said the pedestrianisation of sections of Charl Malan Street is expected to improve pedestrian access while reducing conflict between vehicles, pedestrians and informal traders.

"We do ask that residents take the time to submit their comments to ensure that this process is as inclusive as it can be and that we can factor in suggestions and comments," he said.

A public information day will be held at the Bellville Public Library Auditorium on Saturday, June 6 from 9am to noon, where residents can view the proposals and engage with project officials.

Comments can be submitted online here, by email to [email protected], or in writing at the Subcouncil 6 Office at the Bellville Civic Centre or the Bellville Public Library.

The City said feedback received during the public participation process will be considered before any final decisions are made on the proposed changes.
