South African domestic travellers are in for a welcome surprise as low-cost airline FlySafair has significantly slashed its dynamic fuel surcharge.

The airline confirmed that the current surcharge is now 40% lower than the peak level reached in late March 2026, bringing savings to passengers despite scheduled fuel price increases in South Africa on June 3.

According to FlySafair, the reduction reflects improving conditions in the global jet fuel market and forms part of the airline’s commitment to transparent pricing.

Why was the fuel surcharge introduced?

FlySafair introduced the dynamic fuel surcharge in March following conflict in the Middle East, which disrupted global oil supply routes and drove jet fuel prices sharply higher.

From the outset, the airline applied the surcharge as a separate, clearly itemised charge.

The amount is calculated according to each route’s fuel consumption and reviewed weekly to reflect changes in market conditions.

Jet fuel prices are showing signs of improvement

According to the domestic airline, in recent weeks, both the availability and cost of Jet A1 fuel have improved.

Refining margins for jet fuel have also eased, allowing prices to decline faster than movements in crude oil prices alone would suggest.

As a result, FlySafair has implemented its largest surcharge reduction since the measure was first introduced.

Passengers can view the latest surcharge rates for specific routes on the airline’s website, where updated charges and weekly adjustments are published.

“We’re encouraged to see some relief in jet fuel prices, and we’re pleased to be able to pass that benefit on to our customers,” said Kirby Gordon, chief marketing officer at FlySafair.

“When we introduced the surcharge, we committed to reviewing it weekly and reducing it as soon as conditions allowed. This latest adjustment reflects that commitment to transparency and fairness.”

The airline said it will continue to monitor fuel costs on a weekly basis and adjust the surcharge accordingly to ensure it remains aligned with underlying market conditions.
