Experience Youth Day with the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra's concerts
The musicians of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO) will celebrate Youth Day with two special concerts in Cape Town this June.
The first concert, featuring the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble, will take place on Saturday, June 13, at 1pm in the KwaMfundo Secondary School Hall in Harare, Khayelitsha.
The free performance will be conducted by Liam Burden and Charlene Verster and will include a selection of light classics and popular film music.
The second concert, titled Symphonic Adventures, will be held at the Baxter Concert Hall on Tuesday, June 16, at 3pm.
Presented by Aviva Pelham and conducted by Burden, the concert will showcase 70 young musicians from South Africa’s flagship youth orchestra.
Audiences can expect a lively programme featuring Leroy Anderson’s Bugler’s Holiday, music from Frozen, The Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as world music favourites including Lord of the Dance, Miriam Makeba songs and Jerusalema.
Established in 2003, the CPYO and the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble form part of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s Youth Education and Development programme.
The initiative provides music education and performance opportunities to young people from Grade R to university level.
Hundreds of youth from communities including Khayelitsha, Nyanga, the West Coast and the Cape Town CBD have benefited from weekly music lessons and ensemble training at Gardens Commercial High School.
