Radio presenter and former soap opera actress Tess Danker is a finalist in the Ms Supreme Queen Global Earth Africa pageant, set to take place in Johannesburg in August.
The Supreme Queen Global Earth Africa pageant empowers women in business, provides networking opportunities, and serves as a leadership platform for women to use their voices to impact the nation.
The competition is open to married, single, and divorced women between the ages of 20 and 55.
Danker, from Bergvliet, said she entered the competition to expand her business network and further develop herself professionally.
She currently works full-time as a legal immigration specialist and part-time as a presenter at Radio Eersteriver. She also hopes to use the platform to launch her own unisex fragrance line.
“For me, this is a milestone and possibly my last opportunity to enter a pageant. I am very much into business development, and Supreme Queen Global is giving me this opportunity,” she said.
As a single mother, Danker said she also entered the pageant to honour her late mother, Mildred Sassman, and to inspire her daughter.
“Back in the day, my mother was voiceless, and now I am part of a generation where women can be heard. The lessons my mother taught me showed me that women’s voices matter,” she said.
She added that she wants to represent single mothers and the daily challenges they face.
“As a single mom, I entered because I want to be a representation for every single mother and what they go through daily. They don’t have a second income, and I call them heroes,” she said.
More than 20 years ago, Danker won the M-Net Star Maker Story competition, which led to her joining the cast of the popular soap opera Egoli: Place of Gold for 18 months.
After returning to Cape Town, she spent more than 15 years at CCFM and later worked at several local radio stations. She is also involved in coordinating wellness events.
As part of her role as a finalist in the pageant, Danker is involved in outreach work for the Khaya Centre in Johannesburg, which supports vulnerable orphaned children.
“We assist orphaned children who are left on the streets and lack meals. We are appealing to businesses for donations to support the organisation,” she said.
Danker also hopes to use the platform to educate female pupils on personal hygiene, the dangers of social media, and cyberbullying.
In the lead-up to the pageant, contestants are encouraged to gain public votes ahead of the final event, which will be held at a spa and conference centre in Johannesburg.
