The community of the Wesbank are seeking justice for Saturday’s mass murder victims after the senseless shooting left four parents dead and a boy, 7, injured.

The incident in Strandveld Street claimed the lives of three women and a man. Relatives Washiela Opperman and Marius Opperman were among the deceased.

Washiela was married to Marius’ brother.

According to a family representative and community leader, who wants to protect her identity, the shooting is believed to be related to jealousy, as Washiela and her husband had a fruit and veg stall.

She said: “There is speculation that the shooting was gang-related. That is not true because neither of the victims are gangsters.

“According to my understanding, this is a jealousy thing that has been coming on for a very long time. They have their own fruit and veg stall and are working for their family.”

The source said that she had a conversation with the victims, who were enjoying a beer in front of their house, moments before the gunshots rang out.

She added: “I came from a friend of mine and stood by them, chatting for a few minutes. I left to go home, and on my way back, before I could even reach my gate, that was when the shooting happened.”

She said that the seven-year-old boy is still in the hospital after his mother was gunned down too.

The woman said: “The families are trying to be strong, but it is affecting them. Washiela was a mother to four children, and Marius was a father to one son.

“They were all innocent and did not deserve to have their lives ended like this.

“We want justice and appeal to anyone who knows anything or saw anything to come forward and inform the police. They can stay anonymous, but we want those who did this to be held responsible.”

Meanwhile, tributes to another victim, Liezel van der Merwe, were shared online.

Ons 2 Motoriese Kleuterskool took to social media to post about their educator Liezel in a heartfelt post, stating: “A call no one wants to receive. Our hearts are broken, Liezel. You are going to leave such an incredible void in so many people’s lives.

“Thank you for the beautiful person you were. The love and care you gave every child that went through your hands was incredible. We pray with your family and pray for your children who are left behind.

“We will make sure they know how amazing you were. Rest in peace, our dearest Liezel. Ons 2 Motoriese Kleuterskool lost an angel.”

Police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana confirmed that there are currently no new developments or arrests to report at this stage as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or alternatively use the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.
