Controversial Cape Town Reverend Oscar Bougardt has been misled by a fake social media post that claimed Springbok star Damian Willemse had refused to wear an LGBTQI+ armband while playing rugby.
A Facebook account Super Storm Blitz’s post went viral recently, claiming: “Damian Willemse has publicly refused to wear the LGBTQI+ rainbow captain's armband in the upcoming major matches and throughout the playoff run.
“The South African rugby star declared: ‘I WOULD RATHER RETIRE THAN BE FORCED TO DO THAT.’
“His stance immediately exploded on social media for directly challenging the organisers, forcing both Damian Willemse and the team management to make an urgent decision - a decision that is bound to outrage one side of the fan base.”
Despite rugby players not wearing armbands like soccer players, a number of online users were misled by the post.
Among them was the controversial reverend, who posted: “I commend Damian Willemse for standing firm in his convictions regarding LGBTQI+ ideologies and the dispute over wearing armbands in LGBTQI+ colours.

“The notion that one must stand firm in their beliefs is well-founded.
“Although many may label him as intolerant, homophobic and a hater, he should remain resolute.
“Disagreement does not equate to hatred, and differing opinions should be respected.”
Fans were quick to point out that it was a fake post, with @Gabe Dos Santos, writing: “A simple Google search would have helped. Damian Willemse has never refused to wear an LGBTQI+ armband. This claim originated as a viral social media rumour or a confused internet report.”
@John Pascoe, attempted to clarify the confusion, stating there was no official record or verified statement from Willemse, the Stormers, or any rugby authority supporting the allegations.
