The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has started with roadworks in Thornton, Maitland, Cape Town CBD and Newlands.

The work will be done between 7pm and 5:30am, Sunday to Friday.

The anticipated completion date is June 24, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays.

The work being done includes the resurfacing of roads along the following routes:

  • Thornton: Viking Road between Sipres Avenue and Jakes Gerwel Drive
  • Maitland: Voortrekker Road between Koeberg Road and Camp Road
  • Cape Town CBD: Philip Kgosana Drive between Christiaan Street and Roeland Street

In addition, extensive patching will be undertaken along the M3 in Newlands between Newlands Forest and the Joyce Newton Thompson Bridge.

"I am pleased that work on this important project is now under way.

"While construction was originally scheduled to commence in April, persistent wet weather conditions across Cape Town necessitated a short delay to ensure the work could proceed safely and effectively," said Urban Mobility mayco member, Rob Quintas.

"I would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience and cooperation while these essential roadworks are carried out as part of the City’s ongoing road maintenance programme to keep Cape Town’s transport network safe, reliable and moving efficiently."

The projects follow several essential roadworks projects across Mouille Point, District Six, Woodstock, Observatory, and Epping Industrial, aimed at improving the quality and longevity of road surfaces.

Completion of those upgrades are expected on June 30.
