'She was dedicated social worker who spent her life helping others' - Knysna social worker remembered

"She was a deeply compassionate and dedicated social worker who spent her life helping and supporting others."
These are the words used to describe Lauren Fredericks, 37, who tragically lost her life when a tree fell on her vehicle during harrowing weather conditions in Knysna on Wednesday.
Speaking to IOL, family spokesperson Kelly Martin said the family is devastated by her death while on duty.
“She was originally from Atlantis, and her loss is felt from the Garden Route to the West Coast by all who knew and loved her.
"She was a deeply compassionate and dedicated social worker who spent her life helping and supporting others.
"She touched many lives through her kindness, strength, and commitment to her community,” Martin said.
Lauren Fredericks was on duty at the time of her tragic passing.

Fredericks lost her life while conducting assessments during the severe weather conditions.
Martin added: “What happened was sudden and heartbreaking, and we are still trying to come to terms with it. She leaves behind her young son, Miguel, 10, and her husband, Frankie, who meant everything to her. We would like people to remember her not only for the tragic circumstances of her passing, but for the incredible person she was, the care she gave so selflessly to others, and the difference she made in so many people’s lives."
The family has also asked the public to refrain from sharing or reposting graphic videos and images related to the accident on social media out of dignity and respect for Fredericks’ son, husband, and the family.
Western Cape Social Development MEC, Jaco Londt, said: “Ms Fredericks, who joined the DSD Knysna office as a social auxiliary worker in August 2021, was on her way to conduct assessments of residents who were evacuated in the area due to adverse weather conditions. Shortly after stopping, a tree fell on the car."
He described Fredericks as someone with a deep love for her community work.
“I am deeply saddened by this loss. Ms Fredericks had a love for community work and was part of the office’s disaster management response team. Our thoughts are with her family - particularly her young son - friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” Londt said.
“I further wish to acknowledge all frontline workers, including DSD staff, who continue to support and assist vulnerable residents during the current adverse weather conditions,” he added.
