The SA National Parks (SANParks) has celebrated successes along key areas of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), with four suspects linked to the poaching of abalone, a suspect believed to be involved in theft, and others in alleged fynbos poaching.

On the night of April 23, the SANParks K9 and SEAM units executed a targeted operation in the southern park section, focusing on abalone poacher camps and intelligence gathering.

K9 patrols between Smitswinkel and Black Rocks tracked and led to the apprehension of four suspects, one of whom attempted to flee.

Peter Mbelengwa, SANParks spokesperson, said: “While transporting suspects, the police identified and apprehended two additional individuals linked to abalone poaching activities. SANParks said all suspects were arrested, poaching equipment was confiscated, and the individuals were handed over to SAPS for further processing.”

In a separate incident at Lion's Head, SANParks rangers and City Law Enforcement intercepted a suspect attempting to flee after stealing items from a parked vehicle.

“The individual was blocked before leaving the scene, and stolen property was recovered,” added Mbelengwa.

“The suspect admitted to the theft and was handed over to SAPS for processing.”

During another incident, a tip-off was received of suspected fynbos poaching on Devil’s Peak.

The SANParks Operations Room coordinated and located the suspects and directed Rangers to the scene, resulting in a successful apprehension.

“These successful operations highlight the continued vigilance and collaboration of enforcement teams in protecting visitors and conserving our natural heritage,” he said.
