Caught red-handed: 32-year-old nabbed with fake firearm in Steenberg

A 32-year-old suspect arrested for the possession of an imitation firearm.

A 32-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Thursday after he was arrested following a tip-off that he was in possession of a firearm in Steenberg. 

Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said members from Operation Shanela II searched the  premises in Sullivan Street.

"They received information of an alleged gang member who is in possession of a firearm. During the search of the premises they found a replica rifle in the house.

"The 32-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of an imitation firearm," said Twigg.

In an unrelated matter, 21-year-old suspect will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court on Thursday for the illegal possession of a firearm, after police arrested him in Strandfontein.

"Members of Strandfontein police responded to information they received of a person who is in possession of a firearm in Birkenhead Drive, Strandfontein on Tuesday afternoon," Twigg said. 

"Upon arrival at the identified address, the suspect was pointed out to the members and his bag was searched.

"A Taurus revolver was found in his bag. He could not produce a firearm license and was subsequently arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm."

On Tuesday, SAPS members from Operation Prosper in the Steenberg and Muizenberg policing precincts arrested a suspect for the possession of drugs.

Twigg said the members were conducting crime prevention operations in the Hillview area when they received information about the drugs at a premises in Orchard Street.

"They followed up the information and searched the identified premises.

"During the search the members found 27 mandrax tablets, 16.94 gram uncut methamphetamine and 86 small sachets containing methamphetamine hidden in the oven in the house.

"A 29-year-old male was arrested for the possession of drugs."
