Grade 6 and 7 learners who committed themselves to understanding and protecting their local ecosystems have graduated as Junior River Wardens.
The ceremonies were held at three local primary schools: Floreat, Ysterplaat and Red River primary schools as part of the City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Management's Junior River Wardens (JRW) programme.
"These learners have demonstrated that environmental stewardship is not just about the future; it is about active citizenship right now," said deputy mayor and mayco member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews.
"Their journey does not end here.
"While some are moving on to the prestigious Nature Connect Conservation Leaders Programme to continue their growth through to Grade 12, others are embarking on new environmental paths.
"Regardless of where they go, they carry with them the knowledge and heart to protect our ecosystems."
The ceremonies were held at:
- Red River Primary (April 24): The final ceremony of the season honoured the 2025 cohort for their year-long dedication. New recruits were officially inducted with welcome packs, signalling the start of their journey as custodians of the river.
- Ysterplaat Primary (March 27): Brought together a multi-grade audience of learners and parents. The school leadership and City staff emphasised the power of collaboration in shaping the environmentally conscious leaders of tomorrow.
- Floreat Primary (March 18): Kickstarted the season with a high-energy event that saw strong community participation, fostering a sense of local pride and confidence in the outgoing wardens.
The ceremonies were held across three local primary schools: Floreat, Ysterplaat and Red River primary schools.

The Junior River Wardens programme is a flagship initiative of the City’s Environmental Management Department: Biodiversity Management Branch, specifically the Special Projects Unit.
It is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world conservation.
The programme focuses on:
- Hands-on Conservation: Learners engage in practical activities to monitor river health and biodiversity.
- Environmental Stewardship: Participants are taught to see themselves as ‘custodians’, responsible for the sustainable management of their natural surroundings.
- Leadership Development: By participating in the programme, learners build confidence, public speaking skills, and a sense of civic duty.
