A woman has died following a head-on collision in Brackenfell with police confirming that a culpable homicide case has been opened for investigation.
The crash took place on Kruis Road in Ruwari, near Die Vleiswinkel, on Saturday, April 25. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 20:25.
Upon arrival, paramedics found that the female driver had already succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead on the scene. The male driver of a bakkie sustained minor injuries and was taken for medical treatment.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that the matter is now under investigation.
"Brackenfell police registered a culpable homicide case for investigation on Saturday night, April 25 2026, at about 20:50, following a fatal crash involving a Hyundai i20 and a Toyota Hilux light delivery vehicle at the corner of Protea Road and Kruispad," Twigg said.
He added that police and emergency personnel responded swiftly to the scene, where they found the deceased female driver next to her vehicle.
"Police members attended to the accident scene, where they found a female believed to be in her thirties next to the vehicle. She was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel," Twigg said.
According to Twigg, a male victim in his twenties, who sustained bodily injuries, was transported to a medical facility for further treatment.
The incident comes as the country moved into the Freedom Day long weekend period, when road traffic volumes typically increase as people travel for holiday and family gatherings.
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), long weekends in South Africa are often associated with a rise in serious road crashes, with factors such as speeding, fatigue, and alcohol use frequently identified in fatal collisions.
Culpable homicide cases are commonly opened by SAPS in fatal road crashes, where negligence or possible wrongdoing may have contributed to a death, pending the outcome of a full investigation.
