Gang-related shootings and stabbings leave six dead in Cape Flats

A wave of violence swept across the Cape Flats at the weekend, leaving multiple people dead and several others fighting for their lives in a series of shootings and stabbings from Athlone to Mitchells Plain. 

A man was shot on Friday on the corner of Klipfontein and Silvertree Roads in Kewtown, Athlone, at about 12pm.

Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, said police registered an attempted murder case.

SAPS members attended a shooting incident at the mentioned address and on their arrival they were informed that the victim was shot several times and that he was taken to hospital for treatment. The motive is believed to be gang-related.”

On Saturday, several violent crime incidents were reported, including three people who were shot in Freedom Park, Ottery.

According to reports, Landsdowne cops responded to a shooting incident at 1.05am at the corner of Mompane Street and Milkwood Street, Freedom Park, Ottery, in which three men were shot and wounded. 

Van Wyk said: “Two males both aged 31 died on the scene due to injuries sustained, a 38-year-old male was taken to a medical facility for treatment. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body.

“Lansdowne police registered two counts of murder and an attempted murder case for investigation.

“Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. The motive is believed to be gang-related.”

In Mitchells Plain, a 36-year-old man was killed after sustaining a stab wound to his neck in Montagu Drive, Portlands, at about 6.55pm.

Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said: “Police members attended to the crime scene where they found the victim, who sustained a stab wound to his neck. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. 

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no arrests have been made yet.” 

Mfuleni police officials responded to a stabbing incident that occurred on Saturday at about 11.40pm in Diepwater Street, Wesbank.

Twigg added: “Upon arrival on the scene, they found an adult male who sustained a stab wound to his chest. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. 

“According to reports, the victim had an argument with the suspect before he was stabbed. The suspect fled the scene and is yet to be arrested. A murder case was registered for investigation.” 

Twigg added that Ocean View SAPS registered another murder case following a stabbing incident in Masiphumele that occurred on Saturday, which claimed the life of a 21-year-old man.

In Heideveld, three people were shot in Rosa Court on Sunday at about 7.30pm.

Twigg reported: “A 33-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded, a 25-year-old male and two unknown females were wounded. Police members attended to the crime scene, where they found the victims who sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies. 

“The 33-year-old victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the other victims were transported to medical facilities for treatment. 

“The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation, and no arrests have been made yet.”
