The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has commenced road marking along Kloof Nek Road, Tafelberg Road, and St Michael's Road.
The road marking is for the new heavy vehicle lane and a compulsory heavy vehicle stop on Kloof Nek Road in order to address heavy vehicle accidents on Kloof Nek Road along the downhill section heading into the city.
The work commenced on Wednesday, April 22, and is expected to continue until, May 2026, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays.
The work will take place at night from Monday to Saturday between 7pm and 4 am.
According to the City, the new heavy vehicle lane and compulsory stop will be installed approximately 150m downhill from the pedestrian signal at Tafelberg Road.
The current right-hand lane will accommodate general traffic, while the left-hand lane will be reserved for heavy vehicles only, for a limited distance of approximately 250m.
The City’s mayoral committee member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, said they proposed this late last year, and the feedback from the public was positive.
“Drivers of heavy vehicles will now be required to stop, engage a lower gear, and keep it in that low gear for the whole downhill stretch into the city. This will help prevent the kind of accidents we've seen too often on this road.
“Our teams are working overnight to minimise disruption while the new road markings and signage are installed, but there will be some congestion if you are using that route between 7pm and 4am, Monday to Saturday, over the next two weeks. Please drive carefully and watch out for our team carrying out this after-dark work,” he said.
