An attempted murder case has been opened following the shooting of a bread delivery driver in Kraaifontein on Tuesday morning, April 21.
The incident occurred at about 9:30am in Basakabini Crescent, Wallacedene, where the victim was shot and injured.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain F.C. van Wyk said officers responded to reports of a shooting but found that the victim had already been rushed to the hospital.
"He was delivering bread when five unidentified males (suspects) approached him and robbed him. In the process, he was shot in the face,” he said.
Police confirmed that a case of attempted murder is under investigation.
According to a source, the victim was the driver of the delivery truck, while a security escort and other assistants were left traumatised.
Kraaifontein Community Police Forum chairperson, Mawethu Sila, said the forum had not yet received a full briefing on the incident. He encouraged community members to assist the police with information.
“All criminals come out of houses. If the community does not stand up, there is nothing that the police can do to stop these shootings. Community members would just keep quiet; as a result, the perpetrators would think they have a licence to kill and rob other people.
"I understand that people may not want to come forward because they will be cross-questioned as a witness, as if they themselves committed the crime. So we also need cameras to be installed,” he said.
The incident occurred just three months after another delivery driver was shot dead in Wallacedene on Saturday, January 24, at around 5:50am in Boesak Road.
