A simple question at a bus stop in Hanover Park sparked a love story that has come full circle, with a couple now graduating side by side with Master’s degrees.
In November 2012, Lance Bowers was on his way to the University of the Western Cape (UWC) when Dominique approached him and asked, “Do you take this bus?”
That brief exchange turned into a conversation, then companionship, and eventually a partnership that would span more than a decade.
“We got on the bus and started chatting. We ended up sitting together, and from there, things just grew,” Lance recalled.
At the time, Dominique was working at UWC’s School of Natural Medicine, while Lance was studying towards his Bachelor of Education. Their relationship developed in the spaces in between, on bus rides, between lectures, and during long days shaped by work and study.
By 2016, Lance had completed his degree, and the couple married the same year. For many, that might have marked the end of a demanding chapter, but for the Bowers, it was only the beginning.
In 2017, Dominique began her own academic journey, enrolling for an Advanced Diploma in Management, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration in 2021. Their home became a shared space of deadlines, discipline and mutual support.
Their journey was not without hardship.
In 2022, while balancing part-time studies, Dominique fell seriously ill. At the same time, Lance had just begun his Master of Philosophy in Sport for Development. The pressure of illness and academic demands placed immense strain on the couple.
Instead of breaking them, it revealed the strength of the community around them.
“Our village, our family, church and loved ones carried us. Through prayer, meals, childcare and care after I was discharged from the hospital, they held us together during one of the most difficult seasons of our lives,” Dominique said.
Grounded in their faith and guided by the scripture Romans 8:28, they found meaning in their struggle and strength in each other.
With renewed determination, Dominique completed her Master of Commerce in Information Systems, while Lance completed his Master of Philosophy in Sport for Development.
Now, in 2026, the couple has graduated together, marking a milestone shaped by years of perseverance, sacrifice and unwavering support.
Their story stands in contrast to the narrative often associated with Hanover Park, a community frequently defined by socio-economic challenges.
Having walked across the stage on Monday, April 13, their message is clear: where you begin may shape your journey, but it will never define your destination.
