A 38-year-old mother and her 12-year-old son were shot dead in a mass shooting that left four others wounded on Friday night in Leiden Avenue, Delft.
According to reports, an unknown male knocked on the door, and when the door was opened, he started shooting at the unsuspecting victims.
When the Cape Argus sister publication, Daily Voice arrived at the house, the team was told by residents that nobody was there.
When the reporter went onto the premises, the pink front gate was wide open; the safety gate was closed, but the front door was open.
The small house was accessible, but nobody seemed to be home.
Residents in the area were too scared to speak to the media out of fear for their safety, as they claim the shooting is gang-related.
One of the victims' family members said they refused to comment as their relative was in a critical condition in hospital.
They said their family member was innocent and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
One of the residents who wants to remain anonymous said: “They sell drugs at the house where the shooting took place. Apparently, a white Polo pulled up, and the occupants of that vehicle got out and knocked on the door. When the door was opened, that was when they shot everyone. At the time of the shooting, everyone was in the house, including the babies. The mother and her son were shot dead, and the 21-year-old brother is in critical condition in the hospital. Two women were in the house who were shot and wounded in the shooting, but they don’t live there.”
Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, confirmed the motive for the attack was not yet determined, and the shooting is under investigation.
"Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting, and upon arrival on the scene, they found the victims who sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies. The 38 and 12-year-old victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the other victims were transported to a medical facility for treatment.
"According to reports, an unknown male knocked on the door, and when the door was opened, the suspect opened fire on the victims and fled the scene. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined."
