A mother has been left distraught after learning that no arrests have been made four months after her son’s death in a hit-and-run, allegedly by an off-duty cop.
Alex Scott, 21, tragically passed away on November 30 after he was struck by a vehicle in Bellville.
Reports later surfaced that the driver may have been an off-duty Ravensmead police officer, who was allegedly picked up from the scene by a marked police vehicle before investigators arrived.
In a recent parliamentary reply on the investigation into the death of Scott, it was said that an arrest could only be made once the investigation is complete, despite cops knowing who the suspects are.
Member of Parliament, Nicholas Gotsell, who has been at the forefront of the case, said it's concerning that the investigation has dragged on for months.
He wrote to Parliament, addressing these concerns, which were responded to by the Acting Police Minister, Firoz Cachalia.
Cachalia said the vehicle used in the incident was seized and booked as an exhibit, after which a forensic examination was conducted on it.
“Warning statements were obtained in both cases, and the case dockets were submitted to the prosecutor at Bellville Court. The prosecutor directed that the investigation be finalised before any arrest is effected," Cachalia said.
“The only outstanding investigations are the blood analysis report of the deceased from the State Forensic Laboratory and the report from the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).”
Scott’s mother, Abby, said she and her daughter, Ashley, have no idea what is going on.
The pair was informed about his passing in February after the incident occurred.
She said: “I just feel that they are going to sweep everything under the rug and their lives are going to go on as per normal, but ours will never be the same again. They didn’t bother to check on him or get medical help.
“They robbed us of our son. He was a good boy and so young he had a whole life to live ahead of him.
“I am trying so hard to process the fact that Alex is gone. All I can think about is when I gave birth and when he was a baby and a small little boy.”
