Elderly man arrested for illegal firearm possession in Brown's Farm

A 64-year-old man is arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

A 9mm pistol with 14 rounds of ammunition and three firearm magazines were confiscated when police arrested a 64-year-old man in Brown’s Farm on Monday. 

Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said the bust was made during intelligence-driven operations in the area. 

"Members of Operation Lockdown III conducted an intelligence-driven operation in Brown’s Farm and searched a premises in Khwezana Street, and confiscated a 9mm pistol with 14 rounds of ammunition and three firearm magazines.

"They arrested a 64-year-old male for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition," said Twigg.

In another incident, in White City, Elsies River, Operation Lockdown III members were conducting stop and search operations in Pancrest Street, and arrested a 19-year-old when they found a 9mm pistol without a serial number in his possession.

He faces a charge for the possession of a prohibited firearm.

Twigg said the suspects will appear in Athlone and Goodwood courts once charged. 

The arrests follow that of a 15-year-old boy who was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm on Sunday night in Atlantis.

Twigg said SAPS was conducting crime prevention patrols in Bunting Crescent, Atlantis, when they noticed a group of people standing on the corner.

The members approached the group and one person ran away.

One members chased after the suspect and apprehended him with a 9mm pistol in his possession.

"He was arrested for the possession of a unlicensed firearm and will appear in the Atlantis Magistrate's Court on Tuesday," said Twigg. 

Meanwhile, police also followed-up information about a vehicle that was hijacked in Mfuleni and heading towards Khayelitsha on Monday. 

"The members searched for the vehicle and found it abandoned in Graceland, Khayelitsha on Monday night. The investigation into the matter continues," said Twigg.
