Two men were shot and killed and five others, including three children, wounded in a shooting incident at the Hazeldene taxi rank on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, the incident occurred at about 2:35pm on April 7 2026, when unknown suspects opened fire on a group of people.
The victims, aged 20 and 22, were fatally wounded. Police confirmed that they were declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. Two adult men and three children, a six-year-old girl and two boys aged 12 and 13, were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
SAPS is investigating two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder. No arrests have been made and the suspects fled the scene.
In a separate incident on Merrydale Street in Portlands, a 26-year-old man was shot and killed. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on the scene. Police believe the attack may be gang-related.
Police said that Anti-Gang Unit detectives are investigating both cases and called for members of the public with information to come forward.
Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said: “SAPS condemns these senseless acts of violence in the strongest possible terms, especially where innocent members of the community, including children, are caught in the crossfire. Such incidents have no place in our communities, and every available resource is being utilised to track down those responsible and bring them to justice.”
The motive for the Hazeldene shooting remains unknown.
