Cape Town theatre-goers are turning out in strong numbers for Pretty Woman: The Musical, now showing at Artscape Theatre Centre until April 19.
The stage adaptation of the beloved 1990 film Pretty Woman, which starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, has drawn enthusiastic local audiences following successful runs on Broadway and in London’s West End, as well as international tours.
Produced locally by Showtime Management in association with Crossroads Live North America, the musical features an all-South African cast, with several award-winning performers.
Among them are Leah Mari, who plays Vivian Ward, and Daniel Conradie, who takes on the role of Philip Stuckey. Both were recently recognised at the Naledi Theatre Awards for performances in other productions.
The story follows the unlikely romance between street-smart Vivian and wealthy businessman Edward, blending humour, romance and nostalgia. The production’s score, written by Bryan Adams and his longtime collaborator Jim Vallance, features songs such as “Freedom”, “I Can’t Go Back”, “Welcome to Hollywood” and “Together Forever”.
Local and international reviews have praised the show’s upbeat tone and strong performances, with critics describing it as a feel-good production that delivers on its promise of escapist entertainment.
Ticket demand for the Cape Town run has been strong, with organisers urging audiences to book early. Discounted options include “Terrific Tuesday” deals, group booking rates, and midweek “Bring your Bestie” offers.
The production carries a PG rating of 12+, with parental guidance advised due to adult themes.
