More than 28 000 Grade 7 learners in the Western Cape have yet to apply for Grade 8 placements for 2027, with just two weeks remaining before the deadline.

The warning was issued by Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier, who said 28 003 current Grade 7 learners still do not have applications submitted as the on-time admissions window closes on Tuesday, April 14.

He urged parents not to delay, warning that late applications reduce the chances of securing placement at preferred schools and place unnecessary pressure on the admissions system.

So far, 125 063 applications have been received for Grades R, 1 and 8 for the 2027 school year.

The warning comes amid ongoing pressure on the province’s admissions system, with late applications in previous years contributing to delays in placing some learners.

Maynier said the department had simplified the application process and expanded access to support, including online submissions, pop-up admissions sites and assistance at district offices.

“We have made it as easy as possible to apply, and made help available to parents who are not able to complete their applications online, so there is no reason not to apply on time,” he said.

Parents are advised to apply to at least three schools, including one closest to their home, to improve their chances of placement.

The department has cautioned that placement at a school of choice cannot be guaranteed and depends on available space and each school’s admissions policy.

Applications require supporting documents such as identification, proof of residence and the learner’s latest school report.

Parents are also encouraged to ensure that all information submitted is accurate and complete, as errors or missing documents could delay processing and affect placement outcomes.

Officials said once applications are processed, parents will receive placement offers and must respond within the stipulated timeframe, failing which the offer may be forfeited and given to another learner.

Parents who miss the deadline may face limited placement options, particularly as space at many schools becomes constrained.

Parents who need assistance can visit pop-up admissions sites or their nearest education district office.

Applications can be completed online via the WCED admissions system.

The deadline for on-time applications is 11:59pm on April 14.
