Two more two taxi drivers and a passenger were shot on Friday amid the ongoing scourge in taxi violence in Cape Town.
A 44-year-old taxi driver associated with the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) was shot dead on the corner of Delft Main Road and Tamarisk Street around 9.20pm on Friday evening.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed: “Delft police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident on Friday night, March 27, at about 9.20pm, on the corner of Delft Main Road and Tamarisk Street, where a 44-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded.
“Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting, and upon arrival on the scene, they found the victim next to his minibus taxi with gunshot wounds to his body.
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for the attack is believed to be taxi-related.”
Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge said that he does not know the full details behind the shooting, adding: “I can confirm that one of our drivers was shot and passed away on Friday…”
In a separate incident on Govan Mbeki Road on Friday, a taxi driver was shot in the arm, while a passenger escaped unharmed.
“Nyanga police registered attempted murder and attempted murder cases for investigation following an incident at the Govan Mbeki Road bridge, on Friday evening, March 27, at about 7.37pm, where an adult male was shot and wounded,” Twigg explained:
“Police members attended the crime scene, where they found the victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to his arm. “According to reports, the victim and a passenger were standing in peak-hour traffic when they were approached by two suspects who wanted to rob them.
“They shot the driver of the minibus taxi. The passenger escaped unharmed. The suspects did not get a chance to take anything and fled the scene.
“The victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment.”
