Fears of taxi war grow after more bloodshed in Delft

Fears of a brewing taxi war are creeping in after another taxi-related shooting resulted in the murder of a Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) taxi guard on Tuesday morning in Delft.

Delft police were called to the corner of Orange and Hindle Road in Leiden around 6am, where they found the body of a 31-year-old taxi door operator was riddled with bullets.

The driver was shot in the chest and right arm and transported to a medical facility for treatment.

Nceba Enge, chairperson of Codeta, confirmed that the victims belong to their taxi organisation.

This shooting comes just two weeks after a triple murder at Voorbrug Taxi Rank in Delft Main Road, where a Codeta and Cape Amalgamated Taxi Associations (Cata) member was killed on March 12.

Nceba, said that this shooting comes just as they are on their way to a memorial service of one of their members who was killed in the Voorbrug Taxi Rank shooting.

“We can confirm that the victims belong to Codeta. We cannot confirm what the circumstances surrounding this incident are at the moment, but we are so shocked about what is happening, because this is not the first time.

“We have a memorial service today (March 24) for one of our members who was shot in Delft just two weeks ago at the taxi rank. We are on our way to the memorial service.

“This seems like a continuation. We can confirm that the shooting is taxi-related, but we do not have the proper details,” Nceba said.

When asked whether there would be more bloodshed, he responded, saying, “We should think that this is going to escalate because of the times in between and the continuity of it (shootings), we should think so.”

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that a murder and attempted murder are under investigation.

“Delft police registered a case of murder and attempted murder, following a shooting incident at the corner of Orange and Hindle Road, Leiden, this morning (March 24).

“Members attended the scene at around 6am and found the body of a 31-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds.

“He was certified dead on the scene, while a second adult male victim, who sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and right arm, was transported to a medical facility.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and the case has been transferred to Provincial Serious Violent Crime detectives for further investigation,” Gwala said
