The City of Cape Town has begun constructing new pedestrian footways across several northern suburbs, aiming to improve safety and accessibility for residents.
The project, led by the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate, is underway along key road segments in Bellville, Uitzicht, Eversdal and Peerless Park West in Kraaifontein. Work takes place from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and is expected to continue until April 29, weather permitting.
Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, said the upgrades are designed to make walking safer and more accessible for communities.
“The construction of new pedestrian footways in Bellville, Uitzicht, Eversdal and Peerless Park West involves preparing the road sites, strengthening the ground, installing new edges and kerbs, improving drainage, and finally laying the footpaths,” Quintas said.
“These upgrades will make it safer and easier for residents to walk in their neighbourhoods and encourage more people to choose active ways of getting around. We thank residents for their patience while this important work is underway as we continue working to keep Cape Town moving.”
The construction will affect several specific road sections, including Riesling Street between Kanonberg Boulevard and Pontac Street in Oude Westhof, Vatican Street between Athens Street and Okavango Road in Uitzicht, Sondal Road and Kendal Road in Eversdal, and Raan Street between Frans Conradie Drive and Horak Street in Peerless Park West.
The City has urged pedestrians and motorists to remain cautious while work is in progress. Road users are advised to slow down, obey signage, and be aware of uneven surfaces, construction workers and increased pedestrian movement near the sites.
The initiative forms part of the City’s broader efforts to promote safer, more walkable neighbourhoods and improve everyday mobility for residents.
