A curious otter briefly turned Sea Point’s normally busy streets into an unexpected wildlife scene this week after the animal was spotted wandering along High Level Road.
The unusual sighting on Monday prompted a quick response from the Sea Point City Improvement District (SPCID), which alerted the SPCA and CapeNature to assist with the situation.
According to the SPCID, their teams are more accustomed to helping ducks cross busy roads in the seaside suburb.
“On this occasion however, it was an otter that needed attention,” the organisation said.
Attempts to safely capture the otter proved easier said than done. The animal reportedly darted away from officials several times, refusing to cooperate as teams tried to guide it to safety so it could be relocated to a more suitable habitat.
Officers from the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement department also assisted on the scene, with teams working together to ensure the safety of both the otter and nearby residents.
Cape Town residents have become increasingly familiar with unexpected wildlife encounters. Previous reports have documented Cape clawless otters appearing in urban spaces such as the V&A Waterfront canals, where a small family drew attention from visitors and researchers.
Experts say sightings have increased across parts of the Western Cape as otters adapt to changing environments, though the near-threatened species remains protected and the public is urged to keep their distance.
For a short time on Monday, however, the otter appeared less interested in conservation debates and more focused on exploring Sea Point, leaving officials scrambling to keep up.
