Western Cape DA MP Nicholas Gotsell is demanding answers from Parliament after the family of Alex Scott waited months for clarity following his death in a hit-and-run that allegedly involved an off-duty cop.
Scott was allegedly struck by a vehicle in Bellville on November 30, 2025. Reports later surfaced that the driver may have been an off-duty police officer who was allegedly pick up from the scene by a marked police vehicle before investigators arrived.
Of the allegations, police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said: “A culpable homicide case docket was registered following the death of a male on November 30, and the investigation remains ongoing.
“It is further alleged that an off-duty police officer was the driver of the vehicle involved, and that he was removed from the scene by two police officers attached to Ravensmead police station.
“These serious allegations are not taken lightly by SAPS management, and are now the subject of a formal investigation.”
Gotsell says the Democratic Alliance is deeply concerned that the investigation into Scott’s death has dragged on for months without clear answers.
Gotsell said: “Even more concerning is the lack of transparency around the officers who allegedly assisted after the collision. If it is true that the driver was removed from the scene before investigators arrived, this raises extremely serious questions about defeating the ends of justice.
“While the investigation must determine exactly who was responsible for the collision itself, the circumstances that have emerged publicly point to the possibility of a cover-up that cannot be ignored.”

He added that the Scott family deserves answers after months of uncertainty.
In a series of parliamentary questions sent on February 26, Gotsell asked the Minister of Police for full details of the alleged hit-and-run that claimed Scott’s life, including when and where the crash happened, the vehicle involved, and what investigators say unfolded that night.
The MP further questioned whether alcohol or toxicology tests were conducted on the alleged driver, whether CCTV or traffic camera footage was obtained, and whether the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).
The Scott family is preparing to finally lay Alex to rest today after his body remained in a mortuary for months.
His mother, Abigail, said she is still struggling to accept the loss.
The emotional mom said: “He is still my little boy, I can’t let him go. I’m dreading the funeral, seeing the coffin go down; I don’t know if I can handle it.
“This is so hard, all I want is my baby back, but he is gone.”
