Three local teenagers were assisted after their small boat capsized near the mouth of the Keurbooms River in Plettenberg Bay on Sunday morning.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), its Plettenberg Bay Station 14 crew were activated shortly after 10am following eyewitness reports that a rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) had capsized with three people in the water.
NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty coxswain Robbie Gibson said the alarm was raised at about 10.04am.
“NSRI rescue swimmers responded to the scene while NSRI crew responded to our NSRI Plettenberg Bay Station 14 rescue base where the rescue craft Ray Farnham Rescuer and Eric Stratford were launched,” Gibson said.
When rescuers arrived, the three local male teenagers had already managed to reach the beach safely.
“Their capsized craft was recovered from the surf zone,” Gibson said.
The teenagers were medically assessed at the scene. Two of them sustained minor injuries, but none required further medical treatment.
“They were reunited with family and required no further assistance,” Gibson said.
Initial reports suggest the teenagers had been fishing from their boat on the Keurbooms Lagoon when the vessel was swept through the river mouth and into the surf.
Despite attempting to deploy an anchor, the boat dragged anchor before capsizing.
