A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of City of Cape Town councillor Lazola Gungxe, who was shot dead in Nyanga last month.
Western Cape Serious Violent Crime detectives arrested the suspect on Friday, March 6. He is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday, March 9.
Gungxe, 48, was killed on February 3 after attending a community meeting in Nyanga.
Police confirmed the arrest in a statement.
“Western Cape Serious Violent Crime detectives have arrested a 26-year-old suspect on Friday, 6 March, for the murder of Lazola Gungxe in February 2026,” police said.
Authorities said the investigation is continuing and will determine whether the suspect may be linked to other crimes.
“The investigation will also determine if there were other suspects involved in the shooting incident,” police said.
According to previous reporting by the Cape Argus, Gungxe was attending a community engagement in the Nyanga area shortly before he was shot.
Police previously confirmed that the councillor was fatally shot by gunmen after the meeting.
Gungxe served as an ANC proportional representation councillor in the City of Cape Town and was linked to Subcouncil 13, which includes areas such as Nyanga, Gugulethu, Philippi and Crossroads.
His killing sparked condemnation from political leaders and community organisations at the time, with calls for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
