Ten taxi drivers were arrested in just 24 hours this week as the City of Cape Town intensified its crackdown on motorists with outstanding warrants totalling more than R632 000.
Four of the arrests were made during peak-hour patrols on the N2 on Thursday, 26 February, and Friday, 27 February.
On Thursday, officers detained a driver with 22 outstanding warrants valued at R90 350. Another driver was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident in which he allegedly stole the other driver’s keys and drove off. A check revealed he had 20 outstanding warrants amounting to R68 900.
On Friday, two more taxi drivers were arrested one with 18 warrants worth R56 200, and another with 29 warrants totalling R114 700.
In a separate integrated operation in Sea Point and surrounding areas on Friday morning, traffic officers arrested six drivers with 123 warrants between them, valued at R301 900.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, said the arrests were part of a broader enforcement drive.
“These are but a few examples of the thousands of motorists who go about their days, showing scant regard for law and order, but also dodging accountability,” he said.
City-wide, between July 2025 and January 2026, traffic officers executed 52 938 warrants against motorists who failed to appear in court for unpaid traffic fines.
Of these, 20 724 motorists or 39% were detained until their court appearances, compared to 11% during the same period the previous year.
Over the seven-month period, officers recorded more than 2.2 million offences, made 1 411 general arrests and impounded 5 632 public transport vehicles.
Smith said amendments to the City’s Traffic By-law were nearing completion, aimed at addressing serious transgressions and curbing lawlessness on the roads.
