Scottsdene High School remembers teacher Cohlyn Jacobs, who died in a tragic crash

Scottsdene High School in Kraaifontein is mourning the loss of Cohlyn Jacobs, a teacher who lost his life on Saturday in a motor vehicle accident.

Jacobs, 32, was a Grade 9 teacher who taught Business Studies and Economic and Management Science (EMS) at the school.

He tragically lost his life on Saturday morning, around 7.20am in Spes Bona Road, Durbanville.

Another adult male, who was the passenger, was transported to a medical facility for treatment.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a culpable homicide case is under investigation.

Twigg said: “Durbanville police registered a culpable homicide case for investigation following an accident in Spes Bona Road, Durbanville, on Saturday morning, February 28, at about 7.20am, in which a 31-year-old male was fatally injured.

“An adult male who was a passenger in the vehicle was transported to a medical facility for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no arrests have been made.”

Spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department, Millicent Merton, extended condolences on behalf of the WCED and said that counselling support has been arranged for the learners at the school.

Merton said: “The WCED is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of a Grade 9 teacher at Scottsdene High School in Kraaifontein following a car accident over the weekend.

“Mr Cohlyn Jacobs taught Business Studies as well as Economics and Management Sciences. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire school community during this difficult time. Counselling support has been arranged for learners and staff at the school.”

Tributes have been flowing in on social media from friends, family, and learners who knew Jacobs.

His mother, Nicolene Jacobs, took to her Facebook to write a message to her late son, which read: “Dis so seer. My son, mommy loves you endlessly.

“My baby boy. Rest in peace Cohlyn. I don’t have words. My boy was always so jolly. Always had a smile and baie lief vir sy dansies. (loved his dances). 

“Ai Cohlyn, 32 years, you were given to your dad and me. You will always be in my heart, my loving son.”

Lisa Khanya also took to Facebook to write: “We’ve lost one of our best teachers as the Scottsdene High School learners. Rest in peace Mr Jacobs.”
